??/??/86 Penn State, State College, PA (Rvwd 3/95) This version
has an extremely groovy jam segment that has more in common with YEM than
the Mike's Songs ("MikeSs") of today. Some groovy rythym changes from Fish,
and the usual great work from Trey (he's all over the place on this one)
and Mike. Keys are very straightforward, but certainly not unskilled or
lame (I assume this is Page at the keys). This version is only 8 minutes
long (at 8 mins, they started into Hydrogen but then dropped it.. someone
in the audience yelled 'Thank you' and Trey yelled 'Your welcome!'). A
solid C+ Mikes. Lots of snaky jamming in this version. I would really
recommend this tape, though, even though copies that are out there should,
for the most part, be hissy like mine. There are Pink Floyd "Money" teases
from Mike in the A-TRAIN, and this tape has The Most Amazing Tela Ever
That Was. It is an EPIC TELA... it used to be played this way back in the
mid-80s, but they didn't play it very often because of its epic arrangement.
It is FOURTEEN minutes long, People! The average nowadays is about 6 minutes
or so. There is a long Caravan-esque drum intro, plus it contains weird
lyrics (I honestly am not a "lyrics" person, tending to focus primarily
on the music, but noticed that this version contains "Shadow of Wilson's
castle" lyrics on top of the ones we hear today.. ). ANYWAY, this is an
EPIC version of Tela that is just extraordinary. There's some really bizarre
AHH-OOOOO singing at one point that sounds similar to the old Star Trek
t.v. show credits soundtrack! This show is also played outside, apparently
in a quad of some sort. Just before 'Walk Away,' Trey shouts stuff at people
off in the distance, both those in a dorm and on a mountain (Fluffhead
is for the people on the mountain, I think). Trey talks about FEELIN GROOVY
(for all of you Phish&Drug thread aficionados). I think I got this
tape from cubed.. thanks, Mark Goldberg!
