March 1988 "Townsend" (Rvwd 3/95) This is filler on one of my
tapes, and the HFB is silent about any March 1988 "Townsend" shows, so
I don't know whether this is right. It doesn't really matter, though, because
there ain't nothing too special about this MikeS. The Weekapaug was great,
but the MikeS was very, very dull. The opening lyrics segment is standard,
as is the opening jam segment (sounds more like the jam segments of today,
only not nearly as fearsome). Lots of sustaining by Trey. Not a very exciting
version at all, and it only lasts about 7 minutes taboot. Hydrogen is standard.
Weekapaug comes kicking in, and apparently makes up for the astoundingly
plebeian Mikes. It is a solid, fiery version with a lot of hot soloing
from Trey and Mike (with Page and Tubbs keeping the groove). Trey's control
is just sick. He was an excellent musician even back then!! ;-) Weekapaug
ends after about 9 minutes, and it is really great. It salvaged this whole
Mikes experience, which is why this gets a C+. (this is my earliest
Mikes HYDROGEN Weekapaug)
